What to Do If You Have a Car Accident in a Rental Car in the UAE: Step-by-Step Guide
Renting a car in the UAE is one of the most convenient ways to get around, but even with world-class roads, accidents can still happen. If you’re involved in a collision while driving a rental car, stay calm and follow this official UAE procedure to handle the situation properly.
Stop and Turn on Hazard Lights
Immediately pull over, activate your hazard lights, and move the vehicle to the side of the road if it’s safe. Never leave the scene until the formalities are complete.
Check for Injuries
Ensure all passengers, drivers, and pedestrians are safe. If anyone is injured, call emergency medical services at 998 right away.
Call the Police (Mandatory!)
In the UAE, police must be called even for minor damage. It is illegal to leave without a report.
Police
999
Ambulance
998
In Dubai or Abu Dhabi, minor accidents can also be reported via the Dubai Police or Abu Dhabi Police mobile apps.
Take Photos and Gather Information
While waiting for the police, take clear photos of:
- Vehicle positions on the road
- All visible damage
- Traffic signs, lights, and intersections
- Other drivers’ licenses and insurance papers
- License plates and rental car stickers
Get the Official Police Report
The police will issue a color-coded accident report (via SMS or Email):
- Green Report: The other driver is at fault.
- Red Report: You are at fault.
- Grey Report: Fault is unclear (rare).
Notify the Rental Company
Contact the rental agency immediately. Provide the Police Report number, photos, and a clear explanation. They will arrange for a replacement or a tow truck.
Do Not Repair the Car Yourself
You are not allowed to repair the vehicle. Only the rental company handles repairs through approved agency service centers.
Clarify Your Insurance Coverage
If you have Full Insurance (CDW), damages may be covered. If at fault, an excess fee might apply. Ask your provider for specific details regarding your agreement.
Keep All Documentation
Retain copies of the rental agreement, police report, and all correspondence. These are vital for deposit refunds or insurance disputes.
Additional Important Tips:
- Never leave the accident scene — it is a criminal offense in the UAE.
- Do not agree to a verbal settlement — this is illegal. You must have a police report.
- If you don’t speak English or Arabic, ask hotel staff or a tour guide to assist you in communicating with the police.
