Salik System in Dubai: New Tariffs and Penalties Announced
Starting from late January 2025, Dubai implemented an updated Salik toll system that now adjusts toll charges based on the time of day. This major update aims to manage traffic flow during peak hours and improve road efficiency across the city.
Peak Hours (Mon-Sat)

Off-Peak & Sundays
4 AED
Flat rate on Sundays and all other times
Free Interval
0 AED (FREE)
Every night from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM
Using the Salik System
Purchase the Tag: Drivers must buy an RFID sticker (Salik tag) for 100 AED (50 AED credited to the account).
Installation: Place the sticker on the windshield directly beneath the rear-view mirror for proper sensor detection.
Top-Up: Use the Smart Salik app, ATMs, or kiosks to maintain a positive balance.
Fines for Violations
- • 100 AED: First offense (insufficient balance or no tag)
- • 200 AED: Second offense
- • 400 AED: Each subsequent violation
Note: Passing through Mamzar or Safa North/South in the same direction within one hour is charged only once.
Tips for Reducing Toll Expenses:
- Use free alternative routes: Al Khail Road, Emirates Road, and MBZ Road.
- Plan your inter-city trips outside of peak hours or on Sundays.
Driving as a Tourist?
If you rent a car in Dubai, you don’t need to worry about buying a Salik tag — rental vehicles come pre-equipped. Charges are billed automatically by your rental agency. To rent a vehicle legally, ensure you have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national license.
