Who Has the Right to Issue International Licenses in the UAE

In countries that have ratified the UN Vienna or Geneva Road Traffic Conventions, the issuance of official International Driving Permits (IDPs) is allowed only to specialized authorities — government institutions (such as the police) or organizations accredited by IFA or FIA.

The International Drivers Association (IDA) is certified by the International Federation of Autotourism (IFA) and operates in the UAE through official channels: ida.ae and ida.or.at.

How to Verify the Authenticity of an IDP in the UAE

Correct Title: The document must be clearly titled “International Driving Permit (IDP)”.

Central Database Registration: Verify via the QR code on the document or at ida.or.at/check-idp.

Validity Standards: According to UN standards, IDPs are valid for no more than 3 years and cannot exceed the NDL expiration.

Visual Compliance: The cover must be gray and include the official stamp of an IFA-accredited organization.

Page Content: Page 1 must show the ID number, validity, and IFA certificate. The last page must contain the holder’s personal data.
